Glass Pipes vs. Water Pipes: What's Right For You?

Glass shopping online is a coin flip. Photos lie about size, weight, and finish. Here's the in-person breakdown we give customers walking into our Gilbert shop trying to choose their first (or fifth) piece.
Hand-pipes
The simplest, most portable option. No water, no setup. Best for solo use or on-the-go. Look for thick borosilicate glass and a deep bowl. GRAV makes some of the most consistent hand-pipes in the industry.
Bubblers
A hybrid — hand-pipe size, water filtration. Smoother than a dry pipe but smaller than a full bong. Great middle ground if you want filtration without committing to a full water pipe.
Beaker & straight-tube bongs
The classic bong silhouette. Beaker bases hold more water and are more stable; straight tubes give a faster, more direct hit. Both benefit from an ice catcher and a quality bowl.
Dab rigs
Smaller, percolated, made for concentrate use with a quartz banger or e-nail. If you're moving from flower to concentrates, you want a dedicated rig — not a re-purposed bong.
What to budget
- Solid hand-pipe: $20–$50
- Quality bubbler: $40–$120
- Mid-range beaker: $60–$200
- Premium rig with banger: $120–$400+
Skip the cheapest tier
Sub-$15 glass cracks. The joints are thin, the bowl walls are thinner, and one bump turns it into a memory. Spend a little more once and own it for years.
